How many times have you stopped just before buying a garment because you thought “if it gets dirty, how do I wash it?”. This is the case with velvet clothes, considered very delicate.
This type of fabric, smooth or ribbed, is usually used to make trousers and jackets and their care can often be daunting.
In reality, with a few simple tricks, which can be put into practice even within the home without having to resort to professional help, washing and ironing become child's play!
How to Wash Corduroy Pants in the Washing Machine
Corduroy pants should be washed periodically and carefully, to reinvigorate the fabric. It is notoriously a very delicate fabric and is easy to wear in the inner thigh area and on the back, which comes into contact with various surfaces.
To avoid the problem of deterioration, we recommend washing the trousers inside out in the washing machine and using specific products and detergents for delicate items, even better if for wool. Choose the wool or delicate item program and bring the temperature to a maximum of 30 degrees . Velvet does not like the spin cycle: hang your velvet trousers out while still wet in the shade, possibly in a ventilated area. Be very careful not to expose the washed trousers to sunlight , as this could discolour the fabric!
Always wash velvet garments alone: rubbing them with clothes made of other materials or with particular textures could cause irreparable damage, causing the velvet fabric to crease, become dull or even puncture.
If you usually add fabric softener to your washing machine, there are no contraindications for velvet trousers . Just use a small amount because the detergent for delicate or wool garments already has a softening effect on the fibres.
How to iron velvet trousers
Velvet trousers are usually not ironed, to avoid leaving shiny marks on the garment.
If, however, you need to, we recommend doing it with the trousers inside out , or by placing a piece of white cotton fabric between the iron and the trousers , and setting the iron to the wool/delicates option.
Another way to avoid those unsightly shiny spots is to iron them vertically . Hang them lengthwise, with the hem facing up, then steam the garment with the iron, taking care to keep a distance of a few centimetres.
Now that you know all the secrets to washing velvet pants without ruining them, you probably want to know how to store them properly in the closet.
